Clagett Regatta Appoints First Executive Director

NEWPORT, R.I. (August 27, 2014) – The Board of the C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta is pleased to announce the appointment of Trish Walcott as Executive Director of The Clagett Regatta.  This comes as the organization, founded by Judy and Stephanie McLennan in 2002, moves into its second decade of operation.  The Clagett is the premier disabled and adaptive sailing regatta in North America, each year attracting participants from across the world who benefit from everything the event has to offer.

"The Clagett Board is very happy to announce the appointment of Trish Walcott as The Clagett’s Executive Director.  We have worked with Trish in the past as a volunteer.  To now have her assisting the organization on a full-time basis will enable the mission of The Clagett to be applied in a consistent way as we help the sailors  "Reach for Success,” remarked co-founder and President of The Clagett regatta, Judy McLennan.

Walcott started sailing a Laser at seven years old. For the past 30 years she has raced in many boats and taken part in regattas and sailing events across the USA, Caribbean and Europe.  She has achieved the title of National Champion in the Thistle and Yngling classes.  Walcott's professional background enables her to utilize a broad range of skills in the regatta, event and project management areas will be beneficial in her role within The Clagett organization.  Previously Walcott has worked with ESPN, New York Yacht Club and Rocky Hill School.  Her role with The Clagett will allow the event to grow by increasing the benefits it will provide to future sailors.

"The Executive Director position is a perfect fit for me as it combines my recreational therapy degree and event management skills with my favorite sport of sailing.  I am very excited and honored to be able to work with such a great committee, and I look forward to growing the event to allow more sailors to improve their quality of life while having fun racing sailboats," commented Walcott.

About the C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic & Regatta:  Founded in 2002, the C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta honors the late Tom Clagett (1916-2001), a U.S. Navy World War II veteran who learned to sail on Chesapeake Bay.  As a young man he suffered temporary paralysis as the result of a bout of meningitis; an experience that left him with a deep respect for the accomplishments of people with disabilities.  The Clagett’s mission is to assist sailors in realizing their potential on the water by providing them the knowledge and tools to improve their skills as well as the opportunity to utilize these talents in competition. Tom Clagett's motto was "Reach for Success," and it is these words The Clagett strives towards every year.

The event includes all three boats that have been chosen as the equipment of the Paralympic classes: the three-person Sonar, the two-person SKUD-18 and the singlehanded 2.4 Metre (mR).  Clagett competitors have seen medal success at the 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games.  Competitors often comment that The Clagett has improved their quality of life as they apply what is achieved on the water to everyday situations.
